When to Go

Springfield has four distinct seasons. Spring (April–May) is lovely, with mild temperatures and the Ozark hills in bloom — this is arguably the best time to visit, before summer humidity sets in. Summer (June–August) is warm and humid, with highs regularly in the upper 80s and low 90s Fahrenheit; outdoor attractions like Fantastic Caverns and the nearby lakes are busy but well worth it. Fall (September–October) brings cooling temperatures and the russet-and-gold color of the Ozark forests, making it an excellent season for day trips into the surrounding hills. Winter is mild by Midwest standards — snow is possible but rarely severe — and the city continues at a steady pace.

The biggest event draw is the summer festival season. Bass Pro Shops hosts various fishing tournaments and outdoor expos throughout the year. For those interested in Route 66 nostalgia, the shoulder seasons offer the most pleasant driving weather.
