Calvary Episcopal Church

Address 126 N Villard Ave, Red Lodge, MT 59068

A small gable-fronted wood-frame church on the south edge of the Hi Bug district, built in 1898 as the parish for Red Lodge's English-speaking miners and merchants. The Gothic Revival framing is straightforward — pointed-arch windows, board-and-batten siding, a steep front gable with a wooden cross — but the proportions are unusually good.

The interior is plainer than the outside promises: dark-stained pine pews, kerosene lamp brackets converted to electric, a small pump organ that still works. The parish posts the church key with a neighbour during the week so visitors can let themselves in; ask at the chamber of commerce on Broadway for the current arrangement. Worth ten minutes if you are walking through Hi Bug.
