The sanctuary on the west edge of town is a refuge for wild animals — wolves, bears, mountain lions, bald eagles — that cannot be returned to the wild because of injury or human imprinting. A self-guided trail loops past the enclosures, each with a sign explaining the individual animal and how they ended up here. Most have been here for years.
It is a sober, plain-spoken place, run by a small non-profit. No spectacle, no animal performances, no feeding. The grizzlies are the main draw and the only chance most visitors will get to see a Yellowstone grizzly without driving deep into the park. Allow 90 minutes for the full loop; the wolf enclosure has a viewing area best at the keepers' afternoon feeding time, usually around 16:00.
