Nebraska's Centennial Mall

Centennial Mall is a broad pedestrian promenade running north from the state capitol toward the university campus, lined with trees, benches, and historical markers commemorating Nebraska's counties and its history. It was built in 1967 to mark Nebraska's centennial as a state and runs about six blocks, connecting the capitol to the university in a green corridor that is pleasant to walk on a mild day.

The mall is not spectacular — it is civic space of the solid, purposeful Midwestern variety — but it provides a useful organizing axis for exploring downtown on foot. The historical markers are detailed and worth reading if you have any interest in Nebraska history. The view south down the mall toward the capitol tower is one of the better urban vistas in Lincoln.
