Gemfield

Five or six miles north of Goldfield, a patch of low hills called the Gemfield holds one of the larger concentrations of surface chalcedony in the United States — six recognised varieties, some banded, some carnelian-coloured, all weathering out of the volcanic country rock and lying around for the picking. The claim is privately held by Gemfield Resources, but small-scale recreational collecting is generally tolerated for those who follow the posted rules.

Bring water, a hat, sturdy shoes, and a bag for what you find. The best hunting is after a rain, when the dust washes off and the polish on the freshly exposed stones is at its brightest. Check the latest access rules at the Goldfield visitor centre before going — the situation has changed more than once in the last decade.
