Getting There

Goldfield sits on US-95, roughly 185 miles north of Las Vegas (about three hours) and 245 miles south of Reno (about four). There is no public transport, no Greyhound stop, and the nearest commercial airports are McCarran in Las Vegas and Reno-Tahoe. A car is essential.

The drive itself is a good part of the visit — long, empty desert valleys flanked by basin-and-range mountains, with only a few small towns (Beatty, Tonopah) along the way. Fill the tank in Tonopah, 26 miles north, or in Beatty, 65 miles south — there are gas stations in Goldfield but they are not always open and prices are noticeably higher.
