Goldfield Historic High School

Goldfield's high school, built in 1907, is the kind of building boomtowns put up to convince newcomers and themselves that the place would last. Three storeys, brick, classical pilasters, and a capacity for hundreds of students at a time when most Nevada towns had a one-room schoolhouse. It served as a school until 1953 and then sat empty for half a century.

The Goldfield Historical Society has been slowly stabilising and partially restoring the building since the 2000s, and tours are sometimes available on summer weekends. Even from the outside, it is one of the most striking ruins in town: the empty windows let you see right through to the desert sky, and the proportions are still those of a building that expected to stand at the centre of a real city.
