The Esmeralda County Courthouse was built in 1907 and is still in use — Goldfield is the county seat, despite a population that hovers around 250. The two-storey neoclassical building, with its tall arched windows and stone trim, was designed for a town that everyone expected to keep growing. The courtroom inside has its original Tiffany lamps and brass cuspidors, and there is no permanent custodian, no metal detector, and no fuss; if you walk in during business hours someone will usually let you have a look.
The courthouse forms one corner of Goldfield's surviving downtown, opposite the Goldfield Hotel across US-95. Together they give you the original boomtown plan in a single intersection — civic and commercial, both built on the assumption that the gold would last. It did not. But the buildings did.
