The Container Park is part of Tony Hsieh's Downtown Project — a Zappos-founder-funded redevelopment effort that aimed to revive the Fremont East district. The complex is built from stacked shipping containers and modified cargo crates, with around 40 small independent shops, bars, and restaurants set around a central courtyard. A treehouse-style play structure for kids dominates the middle.
The standout art piece is "The Mantis", a 40-foot praying-mantis sculpture made from an old farm tractor that flame-cannons its antennae at scheduled times after dark. It is the most photographed object outside Fremont Street's canopy. The park's tenants change frequently — it has the feeling of a permanent farmers market for indie retail — and the courtyard hosts live music many evenings.
