The Neon Museum

Outdoor graveyard of Vegas's retired neon signs

Address 770 Las Vegas Blvd North

The Neon Museum is exactly what it sounds like: a two-acre outdoor lot full of the giant signs that once advertised long-gone Vegas casinos and motels. The Stardust, the Sahara, the original Golden Nugget letters, Aladdin's lamp, the Moulin Rouge cursive — they are all here, propped up in rows like the world's most colourful auto graveyard. Some are restored and re-lit; most are gloriously rusted.

Guided day tours run hourly and last about 45 minutes. The night tour, when about half the signs are illuminated, is by far the better experience — book ahead, it sells out. There is also "Brilliant!", a projection-mapped show that re-animates dead signs by digitally relighting them in their original colours. The museum sits about a mile north of Fremont Street, easy walking distance from downtown hotels.

A story
The visitor centre is the salvaged lobby of the 1961 La Concha Motel — its swooping shell-shaped concrete roof was disassembled, moved across town, and reassembled on the museum's site in 2012.
