Las Vegas

Mojave Desert city built on casino spectacle, neon fantasy, and outsized entertainment along the Strip.

Viva Las Vegas! Rising like a mirage from the Mojave Desert, Las Vegas is a city built on spectacle. The neon-lit casinos along the Strip -- Roman palaces, Egyptian pyramids, Parisian landmarks -- contrast sharply with the dry, barren landscape surrounding them.

What brings you here is clear: having fun. The casinos are mindboggling, oversized, and available in every shape imaginable. You do not need to fly to Europe or Africa to see the Eiffel Tower, the canals of Venice, or the pyramids of Giza. Vegas offers all of that, plus a few things those places never dreamed of.

But there is more to Las Vegas than gambling. World-class shows, celebrity chef restaurants, desert adventures, and some of the best people-watching on Earth make this a destination even for those who never touch a slot machine.

Local tip

Las Vegas rose from the Mojave Desert and runs 24 hours — there are no clocks or windows in the casinos by design. The Strip looks walkable but the casinos are enormous; distances between them are deceiving, so pace yourself in the heat. Beyond the neon, the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon are all within day-trip range.
