Black Mountain

Volcanic peak overlooking Henderson, with a long view of the valley

Black Mountain is the dark volcanic peak that closes the south end of the Las Vegas Valley above Henderson — visible from much of the city and from almost the whole conservation area. It is not formally inside Sloan Canyon NCA but rises immediately to the north of it, and the standard approach is via desert roads on the Henderson side rather than from the canyon trailhead.

The trail to the summit is around 8 km round trip with about 600 metres of climb — rocky, exposed, and steep in places. From the top, the view runs north over Henderson and the Strip to the Spring Mountains and south across the McCullough Range. Sunrise hikes are popular among locals; carry a head torch and bring layers — it can be cold and windy at the summit even when it's warm below.
