Day Trips

The Black Rock Desert (Burning Man country) lies about 120 km west; the route via Gerlach is a striking drive through alkali playas. The ghost town of Unionville, 80 km south near Mill City, was briefly Mark Twain's home in 1861 — the partially restored adobe ruins are still there. North via US-95 the McDermitt area on the Oregon border has the Pueblo Mountains and the broad sagebrush emptiness of the Owyhee Plateau. Closer in, the Santa Rosa Range and Winnemucca Mountain make for shorter half-day excursions.
