Santa Rosa Range

The Santa Rosa Range rises north of Winnemucca to summits over 2,900 metres, a chain of granite and basalt peaks running for about 60 km. The range is mostly Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service land, with the high passes (Hinkey Summit, Lye Creek) open in summer and the lower foothills accessible year-round.

There are no developed trailheads in the European or California sense — wayfinding is by USGS maps and Forest Service road signs. Wild aspen groves around the high meadows turn brilliant in early October. Bring water, expect afternoon thunderstorms in summer, and treat the area as backcountry.
