Winnemucca Hotel

The plain two-storey wooden building near the corner of Bridge and Railroad is the oldest hotel in Nevada, dating to 1863. For most of its history it was a Basque boarding house — sheepherders coming down from a season in the Santa Rosa Range would stay here, eat at the long table, and drink at the bar.

It is a small piece of living Basque-American history, worth a five-minute walk-through. The bar is still working; the upstairs rooms are no longer rented out as a hotel.

A story
The Winnemucca Hotel was opened in 1863, making it one of the oldest continuously operated hotels in the American West. The bar, with its original mirrored back-bar and pressed-tin ceiling, served Basque sheepherders for nearly 150 years; the hotel building was a Basque boarding house from the 1880s until well into the 20th century.
