Spruce Hole Bog

One of the most intact bog ecosystems in southeastern New Hampshire, Spruce Hole Bog occupies a glacial kettle hole on the western edge of Durham. The bog supports rare carnivorous plants — sundews and pitcher plants — along with bog orchids and the sphagnum moss mat that characterises true peat bogs. A short trail leads to the bog from the parking area on Durham Point Road. Go in spring or early summer for flowering plants; rubber boots are useful after rain. The University of New Hampshire owns the land and maintains it as a natural area.
