Founded in 1866 as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts, UNH moved to Durham in 1893 and has grown into a public research university of around 15,000 students. The main campus is handsome — red-brick Georgian buildings arranged around open quads, with Thompson Hall's clock tower rising above the tree line. Wander through the T-Hall lawn and down to the Mill Pond for the best sense of the place. The campus is open to visitors and the bookstore on Main Street is worth a stop.
