The grandest building on Main Street is Thayer's Inn, a four-storey Federal-style hotel at 136 Main Street that dates to 1843. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it has hosted an improbable roster of guests over its nearly two centuries: P.T. Barnum, Ulysses S. Grant, and three other US presidents all stayed here in the 19th century when Littleton was a stop on the White Mountains tourist circuit. The building's scale and elegant facade stand out even on a street of handsome Victorian buildings.
