Military Park

Newark's central park, anchored by the Wars of America sculpture

Military Park is Newark's main downtown public space, a long narrow park that runs between Broad Street and Park Place. It underwent significant renovation in the 2010s and is now one of the better urban parks in northern New Jersey — well maintained, used, and anchored by several significant pieces of public art.

The Wars of America monument by Gutzon Borglum is the centrepiece and warrants close inspection: 42 bronze figures in a single composition, depicting soldiers from the Revolution through the First World War. The park also has food vendors, a seasonal outdoor event programme, and Wi-Fi. It connects pedestrianly to the NJPAC and the Military Park Path station.

It depicts 42 life-size bronze figures and two horses representing American soldiers across multiple wars. It is one of the most ambitious public sculpture projects ever completed in New Jersey.
