When to Go

The railroad season, May through October, is the main factor shaping a visit to Chama. June through October is the sweet spot: the train is running, the high country is accessible for hiking, and the weather is reliable if afternoon thunderstorms are common. September and October are exceptional — the aspen groves turn gold, the crowds thin after Labor Day, and the weather is cooler and steadier. The fall colour along the rail route is extraordinary.

Summer (July–August) is warm and busy, with the train fully booked on weekends. Winter brings snow and cold; Chama is ski country in a modest way, and the cross-country skiing in the mountains is good when conditions are right. The town is very quiet from November to April, and many services operate reduced hours or close entirely.
