Ernest L. Blumenschein House and Museum

This adobe house on Ledoux Street was the home of Ernest Blumenschein, one of the two artists who founded the Taos art colony in 1898 after their wagon wheel broke down on the road from Denver and they decided to stay. The museum preserves the house much as it was when Blumenschein and his family lived here, with period furniture, art on the walls, and a sense of daily life in early 20th-century Taos.

The house itself is a fine example of Spanish colonial adobe architecture, expanded over decades as the family's fortunes improved. The story of how two artists — Blumenschein and Bert Phillips — effectively created Taos as an art destination by accident is told in the rooms. Worth visiting even if you have limited interest in the paintings.
