The Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park sits on a hilltop just north of Taos, built by local Vietnam veteran Victor Westphall in memory of his son David, who was killed in action in 1968. The white, wing-shaped chapel is a striking piece of architecture against the desert sky, and the interior houses moving photographs and mementos from America's involvement in Indo-China. A sobering change from the art galleries and restaurants of Taos.
