Amsterdam is a former carpet-mill town with the bones of its 19th-century industrial wealth still visible: an armory built like a castle, an Erie Canal-era trading store, a Native American shrine on a hill above the river, and a pedestrian bridge designed to be a destination in itself. None of it is a full day's worth on its own, but together they make a worthwhile stop for cyclists on the Erie Canalway, road-trippers, or anyone with an interest in the upstate New York rust belt.
