Katz's has been on East Houston Street since 1888 and survives on the quality of its pastrami and corned beef, hand-carved at the counter from whole briskets. The ordering system — take a ticket, order at the counter, pay when you leave — is a source of bewilderment to first-timers and a point of pride to regulars. The sign above the table where the deli scene in When Harry Met Sally was filmed has hung there since 1989.
