The Tenement Museum occupies two actual tenement buildings at 97 and 103 Orchard Street and offers tours through apartments that have been restored to specific moments in the lives of immigrant families who lived there between 1863 and 1935. The tours — by guided appointment only — recreate the daily reality of Irish, German, Italian, Jewish and other immigrant communities with unusual specificity. It is one of the best history museums in the United States.
