Saranac Lake is a four-season destination, but each season is genuinely different. Summer (late June through August) is the prime paddling, hiking, and fishing time — warm days, cool nights, and long evenings, though black flies in late May and June can be brutal. Autumn foliage peaks in late September to early October and is one of the best leaf-watching weeks anywhere in the eastern U.S.
Winter is long. Snow can fall from October through April, and serious cold (below -20°F) is normal in January and February. The village leans into it — the Winter Carnival runs ten days in early February, cross-country and downhill skiing options are everywhere, and snowmobile trails radiate out from the village. Mud season in April and early May is the time most locals leave for a holiday somewhere else.
