Saranac Lake is half mountain town, half medical history museum. The Adirondack Carry trail, the lakes themselves, and Mt. Baker offer the outdoor side. The Saranac Laboratory Museum, the Robert Louis Stevenson Cottage, and the self-guided cure cottage walking tour cover the village's strange and important role in the history of tuberculosis treatment. The Winter Carnival, held every February since 1897, brings a glittering ice palace to the lake — one of the oldest winter festivals in the country.
