Boone has no commercial airport and no passenger rail. Most visitors drive.
The town sits where US-321 and US-421 cross, well into the mountains and reached only by winding two-lane road from any direction. The nearest interstate exits are at Hickory (about 70 miles south on US-321) and Wilkesboro (about 35 miles east on US-421). Allow extra time in winter — snow and ice can close roads.
Nearest airports: - Charlotte Douglas (CLT) — about 2 hours by car, the best mainline option. - Tri-Cities Regional (TRI) in Tennessee — about 90 minutes, with limited service. - Asheville Regional (AVL) — about 2 hours via the southern Blue Ridge Parkway when the road is open.
Once in town, downtown Boone is walkable, but everywhere else — the Parkway, Grandfather Mountain, the ski areas — needs a car. There is no taxi standing fleet; rideshare coverage is patchy.
