Boone runs a year-round calendar of reasons to visit, each tied to a particular activity.
Autumn (mid-September to late October) is the headline season. The hardwood forests of the High Country produce some of the most reliable fall colour in the eastern United States, and the Blue Ridge Parkway becomes a slow procession of cars chasing the peak. Mid-October is usually the apex; reserve lodging well in advance.
Summer (June through August) is reliably 10 degrees cooler than the piedmont — a genuine refuge from southern heat. App State summer programs are running, outdoor drama is playing nightly, and the Parkway is fully open.
Winter (December through early March) brings snow, ski traffic, and a quieter campus. Storms can be substantial; plan for road delays. Many small attractions close for the season, but the ski areas (App, Beech, Sugar) hum from mid-December through February.
Spring is muddy and unpredictable but quiet, with rhododendron and dogwood blooming in late April. Off-peak rates apply.
