Forest Theatre

Stone outdoor amphitheatre at UNC Chapel Hill, used for performances beneath the trees since the early 1900s.

The Forest Theatre is one of Chapel Hill's more atmospheric campus spaces: a stone amphitheatre set into the woods near the University of North Carolina. Built in the early 20th century, it has hosted outdoor drama, concerts, and university events for generations, with the trees doing as much work as the architecture.

Drop by when walking between the campus core, Coker Arboretum, and Gimghoul Castle. The theatre is most rewarding when something is being staged, but even empty it has a quiet, slightly mythical feel. Respect closures and event setup, as it remains a working performance space rather than a ruin.
