Getting Around

Chapel Hill is a walkable town. The university campus, Franklin Street, and most of what visitors want to see are all within a comfortable 15–20 minute walk of each other. Carrboro is immediately adjacent — the boundary between the two towns is invisible on foot, and the walk along Franklin Street from the UNC campus into Carrboro takes about 10 minutes.

Chapel Hill Transit runs buses throughout the town and is free to all riders — no fare required. Routes connect the campus, downtown, the South Square area, and the outer neighborhoods. Buses run frequently during the day and into the evening.

Rideshare (Uber, Lyft) is widely available. Useful for reaching the Dean Smith Center or the Botanical Garden if you don't want to walk, and for late-night returns after the buses stop.

Parking: Free street parking exists on some residential blocks adjacent to downtown. The Wallace Parking Deck on West Rosemary Street is the most convenient paid garage for Franklin Street visits.
