The Hatteras Weather Bureau Station is a cheerful yellow-painted wood-frame building in Hatteras Village, built in 1901 and operated as a weather observation station until 1946. It is one of the oldest surviving structures of its kind on the Outer Banks, and its long weather record — stretching back to the 19th century — is still used by climatologists studying storm patterns on the Atlantic coast.
Today it serves as the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau's information centre for the southern end of Hatteras Island. Inside you'll find exhibits on the station's history alongside maps, brochures, and staff who can help with ferry schedules and accommodation. The building itself is worth a look even if you just stop on the way to the ferry docks.
