Raleigh is the state capital and one of the most livable cities in the American South. The unofficial motto is "Trees, Tees, and PhDs" — a nod to its 150-plus parks, excellent golf courses, and the concentration of universities in the Research Triangle.
You can spend a morning exploring three free state museums within walking distance of each other: the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Museum of History, and the Museum of Natural Sciences. All are genuinely good, not just good-for-free.
After the museums, stroll through Historic Oakwood, a Victorian-era neighbourhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The tree-lined streets, ornate houses, and old graveyard full of prominent Raleigh figures make for a pleasant walk. The North Carolina State Capitol and the North Carolina Freedom Park complete the downtown civic circuit.
The State Farmers Market is one of the largest in the Southeast and a great place to buy seasonal produce, baked goods, and local honey. The restaurants inside serve Southern comfort food that draws locals year-round.
With more than 150 parks, gardens, lakes, and greenways, Raleigh offers plenty of outdoor recreation. The Neuse River Greenway runs for nearly 30 miles and is popular with runners, cyclists, and walkers.
