Asheville

Blue Ridge mountain city with an independent arts scene, craft breweries, and the sprawling Biltmore Estate nearby.

Asheville feels like a scaled-down San Francisco set against the Blue Ridge Mountains -- creative, independent, and full of surprises. The city has reinvented itself from a quiet mountain town into one of the South's most interesting destinations, with a thriving arts scene, more craft breweries per capita than almost anywhere in America, and the kind of farm-to-table food culture that bigger cities envy.

The Biltmore Estate is the headline attraction -- George Vanderbilt's 250-room chateau is the largest private home in the country, and the grounds include gardens, a winery, and miles of trails. But downtown Asheville is the real draw. The art deco architecture along Haywood Street, the street musicians on Pack Square, and the independent shops on Wall Street give the city a creative energy that is hard to fake.

The surrounding mountains offer year-round outdoor activities. The Blue Ridge Parkway passes right through, offering some of the most scenic driving in the eastern United States. Hiking trails are everywhere, from easy walks to challenging summit climbs in Pisgah National Forest.
