Things to Do

Banner Elk punches well above its size for a town of roughly 1,500 people. In winter it is primarily a ski destination — Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain both lie within a few minutes' drive — but the summer and fall seasons have their own appeal, from hiking and fly fishing to the famous Woolly Worm Festival. The high elevation keeps temperatures cool even in July, which is reason enough to come when the lowlands are sweltering.
