When to Go

Banner Elk sits at 3,739 feet elevation, which shapes its seasons dramatically. Winters are cold and snowy enough to support two ski resorts — Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain typically open in December and run through March. Snowfall averages around 50 inches per season, though natural snow is supplemented heavily with snowmaking.

Summer is the other peak season. July temperatures rarely exceed 75°F (24°C), making Banner Elk a genuine escape from the heat of the Carolina piedmont and coast. The hiking, fishing, and mountain scenery are at their best from June through September.

October is arguably the finest month of all. The Woolly Worm Festival draws large crowds in the third weekend of October, and the fall foliage at this elevation peaks earlier and more dramatically than anywhere in the lowlands. Expect the roads to be busy on fall weekends.

The shoulder seasons — April-May and November — are quiet, with fewer visitors and lower accommodation rates. Late April brings wildflower blooms, particularly serviceberry and trillium, but some facilities operate on reduced hours.
