San Simeon

Tiny Central Coast village below Hearst Castle and the elephant-seal beaches of Piedras Blancas

San Simeon is barely a village, but it holds one of the strongest day-trip clusters on the California coast. Hearst Castle sits in the hills above Highway 1, the Piedras Blancas shore has one of the easiest elephant-seal viewing spots in the world, and the coast north toward Big Sur is all cliffs, wind, and restless Pacific water.

The place itself is simple: motels, a beach, a pier, and a road that everyone is either driving north to Big Sur or south to Cambria and San Luis Obispo. That is not a weakness. San Simeon works because the anchors are close, vivid, and different from one another.

Give Hearst Castle a reserved tour time, then leave room for the coast. The elephant seals are free to see from the boardwalks, and what you get depends on the season: breeding, birthing, moulting, sparring, or just enormous animals sleeping in heaps on the sand.

Beaches

The beaches around San Simeon are more for walking, wildlife, and cold-water scenery than for a classic sunbathing day. Fog, surf, and wind are part of the deal.
