When to Go

Wilmington's best seasons for a visit are spring (March–May) and fall (September–November): mild temperatures, lower humidity than summer, and the beaches are accessible without the summer crowds. Spring brings flowering azaleas and dogwoods throughout the historic district.

Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, with temperatures regularly in the high 80s–low 90s Fahrenheit. The beaches are at their best but the downtown can feel oppressive in the midday heat. Hurricane season runs June through November; the coast is vulnerable, and Wilmington has been hit directly by major storms.

Winter is mild by Mid-Atlantic standards — January highs typically in the low 50s Fahrenheit — and the city is quiet. The riverfront is pleasant on clear winter days. Christmas in the historic district is atmospheric, with lit window displays in the Victorian houses.

The North Carolina Azalea Festival in April is one of the Southeast's major garden events, drawing large crowds but making the city particularly beautiful during its run.
