The Goodyear Airdock is the airship hangar built by Goodyear-Zeppelin in 1929 to construct the US Navy's giant rigid airships USS Akron and USS Macon. At the time it was the largest building in the world without internal supports — the entire 364,000 square-foot floor is column-free, the doors at either end weigh 600 tonnes and ride on rail trolleys to swing open, and the interior is so vast it is widely (and credibly) said to have its own weather.
The Airdock is still owned by Lockheed Martin and is not open to the public; tours have been arranged only sporadically over the decades. But the building is plainly visible from the access roads to Akron-Fulton International Airport and from Route 224 — and the size of it, even from a distance, has to be experienced. Drive past at sunset, when the parabolic profile is silhouetted against the sky, for the full effect.
A small monument and Goodyear historical plaque a few hundred metres up Massillon Road covers the construction history and the loss of both airships.
