Highland Square is the small commercial strip on West Market Street, about two miles west of downtown, that functions as Akron's bohemian / independent neighbourhood. The mix is what you would expect — used bookstores, vintage clothes, a couple of vegetarian-friendly restaurants, a yoga studio, a tattoo parlour, an art-house cinema (the restored Highland Theatre), and several bars where you can get a decent local beer and a vinyl set after dark.
The annual Highland Square Porchrokr Festival in late summer turns the surrounding residential streets into an open-air music festival, with bands playing from front porches and the closed streets full of food vendors. Even outside that weekend, the neighbourhood is the most pleasant in central Akron for a wander on foot, especially in the leafy streets on either side of West Market.
The Square is walkable from downtown via the Towpath and Bowery Street, but in practice most people drive over and park along Merriman Road or in the small lots behind the strip.
