John Brown House & Monument

Address 514 Diagonal Road

John Brown — the abolitionist whose 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry helped ignite the American Civil War — lived in Akron from 1844 to 1854, working as a wool merchant in a partnership with Akron founder Simon Perkins. The house he occupied, across Diagonal Road from the Perkins Stone Mansion, survives and is open as a small museum run by the Summit County Historical Society.

The exhibits are modest but specific: Brown family belongings, period rooms, and an unfussy account of how Brown's wool-trading years in Akron — and his connections to abolitionist circles in Oberlin and Cleveland — fed into the radicalisation that ended at Harpers Ferry. Across the street, a bronze sculpture by Lou Cella, installed in 2018, shows Brown striding forward with a fugitive enslaved boy.

Open weekends; a small admission fee covers both the John Brown House and the Perkins Mansion next door, which together make a good two-hour combined visit.
