Partially Buried Woodshed

Robert Smithson earthwork slowly settling into the Kent State campus

Partially Buried Woodshed is a Robert Smithson earthwork on the Kent State University campus, created in 1970 by dumping earth over a woodshed until the central beam cracked. It is intentionally plain, weathered, and easy to miss, which is part of its strange power.

The piece rewards travellers interested in land art, conceptual art, or Kent State's layered campus history. It is not a conventional monument, but it is one of the most distinctive things to look for in Kent.
