Rudy's has been the local hot dog chain since 1920 — a tiny family business started by a Greek immigrant on Sylvania Avenue, now with branches at the original location, Reynolds Road, and Alexis Road. The dog is a small pork-and-beef frank in a soft steamed bun, topped with their chilli-meat sauce, mustard and chopped onion.
A hot dog runs around 3 USD; the chilli, the cheeseburger, and the loose-meat sandwich (a Toledo classic in its own right) are the other things to order. Cash only at most branches. Locals will defend the recipe against any Coney Island contender; the chilli, smooth and meat-only with no beans, is the distinguishing feature.
