Oak Openings Preserve Metropark

Large Toledo-area preserve protecting rare oak savanna, sand dunes, wetlands, and pine woods.

Oak Openings Preserve Metropark is the strongest nature outing in the Toledo area, protecting a rare mix of oak savanna, sand barrens, wet prairie, swamp forest, and pine plantations. The landscape is part of the larger Oak Openings region, a biodiversity hotspot formed on ancient lakebed sands left by glacial Lake Warren.

Trails range from short loops to longer hikes and bike routes, so the preserve works for both casual visitors and serious naturalists. Spring wildflowers, summer butterflies, fall color, and winter quiet all have their appeal. Bring water and a trail map, since the park is large enough that a quick visit can easily turn into a longer wander.
