Mattie Beal House

A handsome 1909 Greek Revival mansion preserved as a house museum, the Mattie Beal House sits on what was once the southern edge of Lawton. It is the city's grandest surviving early home — fourteen rooms, columned portico, original woodwork — and gives a good sense of how quickly Lawton became a real town after its dramatic founding.

Open for tours on weekends and by appointment; small admission. The Lawton Heritage Association maintains the house and the surrounding garden.

A story
Mattie Beal drew the second of the lots in the 1901 lottery that founded Lawton — a 160-acre plot just south of town. She was 23 and a single telephone operator from Wichita; the lottery turned her overnight into one of the wealthiest unmarried women in the territory. She used the windfall to build this house in 1909.
