When to Go

Spring and autumn are the right seasons. From late March to early May the prairie in the Wichitas is green and the wildflowers are out; from mid-September to early November the cottonwoods turn gold and bison rut on the open range. Daytime temperatures are usually pleasant: 18 to 27°C.

Summer is hot — 35°C is normal — and afternoon thunderstorms common. Winter days can be mild but nights drop below freezing and ice storms occasionally close the Mount Scott road. The Holy City sunrise Passion play on Easter Sunday is the single biggest annual event; book accommodation in Lawton or Medicine Park well in advance.
