Mount Scott rises to 2,464 feet, the second-highest peak in the Wichita Mountains and the only one with a paved road to the summit. The drive is short — five miles round-trip from US-49 — and ends in a parking lot with a 360-degree view over the refuge and as far as the Texas border on a clear day.
Best at sunrise or sunset, when the granite turns pink and the prairie below is in long shadow. There are no facilities at the top; bring water in summer, when temperatures can climb above 38°C. The road is closed in icy weather.
