Poteau itself fits in an afternoon — the courthouse square, the old hotel, the small museum — but the real draws are within a short drive: the Spiro Mounds archaeological site, the Heavener Runestone, Cavanal Hill, and the Talimena Scenic Byway climbing south into the Ouachitas.
