Spencer Butte is the high point on Eugene's southern skyline — a forested 2,058 ft (627 m) dome that rises from the Willamette Valley and offers the standard local 360° view: snow on the Three Sisters to the east, the Coburg Hills to the north, the Willamette Valley running south.
Two trails climb from the trailhead on Willamette Street: the main trail (1.7 miles round trip, well-graded, the popular choice) and the Ridgeline Trail (longer, gentler). Either way the last hundred metres is bare rock with chains in places — sturdy shoes are sensible. Cool and slick in winter, hot in midsummer. The summit is open meadow with wildflowers from late May.
