The Columbia River Gorge begins about 30 km east of Portland on Interstate 84, where the Columbia River has cut through the Cascade Range, creating a dramatic canyon of basalt cliffs and waterfalls. The Historic Columbia River Highway, built in 1916, runs along the Oregon side with overlooks and access to more than a dozen waterfalls including Crown Point, Latourell Falls, and Multnomah Falls.
Multnomah Falls is the most visited natural attraction in Oregon and gets genuinely crowded in summer — the parking lot fills by 9am on weekends. The Lodge at Multnomah Falls (1925) has a café and is worth visiting. Hood River, about 90 minutes from Portland, is the main town in the gorge and a centre for windsurfing and kiteboarding on the river. The area gets consistently strong winds from the east in summer. Drive time from Portland: 30 minutes to Crown Point, 45 minutes to Multnomah Falls.
